For the past five years, Richard Marshack of Marshack Hays LLP and Kelly Zinser of Zinser Law Group have proudly lead the fundraising effort for the Public Law Center’s pro bono Bankruptcy Programs. PLC runs bankruptcy and reaffirmation clinics to assist self-represented debtors and creditors navigate their way through bankruptcy.
Although bankruptcy filings have decreased, the pro se filing rates in the Central District of California are still some of the highest in the country. During 2015, PLC expects to assist over 500 people at the bankruptcy clinics and 200 debtors at the reaffirmation clinics. PLC’s goal is to continue holding these clinics but to maintain current staffing levels, our fundraising efforts are critical.
The contributions of the Orange County bankruptcy bar to PLC have been praised by all of the judges in the Santa Ana Division. In a speech by the previous Chief Judge for the Bankruptcy Court, Central District, it was noted that Richard Marshack and Kelly Zinser’s efforts are a key part of the process by which the Bankruptcy Court receives funds from the District Court for assisting unrepresented litigants. In 2014, Richard Marshack and Kelly Zinser headed up the event that raised $45,000 for the cause.
All donors and all PLC volunteers will be acknowledged at the OCBA Commercial Law and Bankruptcy Section meeting on October 26, 2015 where the featured speaker will again be Erwin Chemerinsky, Founding Dean, University of California Irvine, School of Law and Bankruptcy Judges Katherine Bauer and Scott Clarkson.
The PLC Fundraising Committee, Richard Marshack and Kelly Zinser, would like to extend a warm thank you to all 2014 donors and PLC volunteers. See a full list of supporters.
